How we prune, and the standard we prune to

Pruning is the part of tree care most often done badly, because the damage is slow and does not look like damage at the time. The industry reference is the ANSI A300 standard, with the International Society of Arboriculture's Best Management Practices as the companion guidance, and the principles are specific rather than a matter of taste.

Cuts are made just outside the branch collar — the slightly swollen ring where a branch meets the stem — because that collar contains the tissue the tree uses to seal a wound. Cut flush and you remove the tree's ability to close it; leave a long stub and it dies back and decays. Only a limited proportion of the live crown comes off in a season, because leaves are how a tree feeds itself, and removing too much at once forces a stress response instead of healthy growth.

Topping — cutting main stems back to stubs to reduce height — is not pruning and we do not do it. It removes the crown wholesale, forces dense regrowth that is weakly attached at the cut, and creates large wounds that decay inward. A topped tree is more hazardous a decade later, not less. Where genuine size reduction is needed, it is done through selective reduction cuts back to appropriately sized lateral branches.

How a tree is assessed before we recommend anything

Risk is not a property of a tree on its own. It is the combination of how likely the tree is to fail, what part of it would fail, and what is underneath — the target. That is why the same defect means different things on different properties: a hollow stem in an open field where nobody walks is a low risk, while a smaller structural fault directly above a driveway or a play area may be a considerably higher one.

The inspection covers the whole tree and its setting. Species and age class, because different trees fail in different ways. Crown condition — dieback, deadwood, thinning, and whether it is worse than last season. Trunk and root collar for decay, cavities, cracks, and fruiting bodies. Structural defects such as included bark and co-dominant stems. Lean, and critically whether it is established or recent. Root-zone condition, including any construction, trenching, grading, or compaction, which is the most commonly missed cause of decline.

What comes out of that is a recommendation with a reason attached: monitor, prune, treat, or remove. Justin Johnson holds ISA Certified Arborist credential RM-8889A along with line-clearance qualification, and where a tree can be kept safely we will say so — mature trees are not replaceable on any useful timescale.

Working near power lines, and where the boundary sits

Work near energised conductors is restricted for good reason, and it is not something a general tree crew should attempt. Line-clearance work requires specific qualification and specific approach distances, and our crew carries that certification — it is one of the reasons we can take on utility-adjacent work that many companies have to refuse.

That does not extend to a conductor that is already down or in contact with a tree. In that situation nobody works on the tree until the utility has confirmed the line is de-energised, including us. If you are looking at a tree or limb touching a line, treat it as live, keep everyone well back, and call 911 and the utility first.

There is also an ownership boundary that catches people out. Trees in the public right-of-way are commonly the municipality's responsibility while trees on private property are the owner's, and the strip between sidewalk and street is frequently not what a homeowner assumes. Most single-tree removals take 4–8 hours depending on size, proximity to structures, and debris hauling. Trees near houses, fences, or power lines require rigging and controlled sectional cuts, which takes longer than a straight felling in an open field.
