Planning a property before the first storm

Most of what goes wrong in February was decided in October. Snow storage is the clearest example: piles consume parking and turning space, block sightlines where a drive meets a road, and melt and refreeze into ice sheets wherever the water runs. A pile in the wrong place creates a hazard that outlasts every storm that fed it, and on tighter sites the piles simply run out of room by mid-season, which is the point at which hauling has to start.

The second piece is marking. Under snow, nobody clearing a property can see irrigation heads, low-voltage lighting, bed edging, culvert ends, drain grates, or where a gravel drive actually ends. Marking those takes an hour in fall and prevents the repair list that otherwise appears in April, while making every visit through the season faster and more accurate.

The third is clearance. Branches that are comfortably clear in September sit considerably lower once they are carrying wet snow, and a limb that blocks a plow means the drive does not get cleared properly. Pruning for winter access is far easier arranged in advance than negotiated mid-storm.

Clearing snow versus managing ice

These are different jobs with different causes. Snow is the storm; ice is the thaw. Western Montana valleys cycle above and below freezing, so a surface that was clear and dry at midday can be genuinely hazardous by dusk as meltwater refreezes — and most winter slip injuries come from that refreeze rather than from fresh snowfall.

Where ice concentrates is predictable enough to plan for: the low point of a drive where meltwater collects, the shaded side of a building that never gets sun, directly below downspouts, and downhill of any snow pile. Those deserve attention on every visit rather than only after a storm. Clearing down to the surface rather than leaving a compacted layer helps considerably, because compacted snow becomes the ice sheet you are fighting a week later.

Surfaces also want different treatment. Gravel drives should not be bladed to the surface, or you pull gravel into the yard and spend spring re-grading. Walkways and entrances are where slip risk concentrates on any property with people arriving, so they generally come first in the sequence rather than last.

How storm response works, and where it stops

Our 24-hour response covers events outside the normal clearing cycle: continuous snowfall that needs repeat passes, wind that drifts a drive shut as fast as it is opened, and the tree damage that arrives with the same weather. Wet snow and ice are what put limbs across driveways and onto roofs, so clearing a drive without dealing with what came down on it is not much use.

Work is prioritised by genuine risk rather than by who called first — trees on occupied structures and blocked emergency access come before cosmetic cleanup. During a widespread wind or ice event demand across the valley is high, and we would rather give you a realistic time than an optimistic one.

There is a firm boundary on power lines. If any part of a tree or limb is touching, resting on, or near a conductor, treat it as energised, keep everyone well clear, and call 911 and the utility. Nobody works that tree — including us — until the utility confirms the line is de-energised. If anyone is injured or a structure is compromised, call 911 first.
