Stump Grinding & Removal
Finish the job properly
A stump left in the ground is not just untidy. It is a mowing obstacle, a tripping hazard, and a long-term food source for decay fungi and wood-boring insects sitting in the middle of your yard. Some species will also keep throwing suckers from the remaining root system for years, which means you are cutting the same tree back repeatedly without ever being rid of it.
Grinding removes the stump mechanically, cutting it into chips below grade rather than trying to pull it out. That matters, because excavating a stump takes far more equipment and does far more damage to the surrounding lawn, irrigation, and root systems of nearby trees than grinding does.
How deep we grind depends on what you want to do with the space. Turf over the top needs less depth than replanting a tree in roughly the same spot, which needs more room and enough soil replacement to give new roots something to work with. Tell us the plan and we will grind to suit it.

Request ServiceWhat stump grinding involves
Grinding sized to what you plan to do with the space afterwards:
- Utility awareness and site check before grinding starts
- Grinding below grade — depth matched to turfing or replanting
- Surface roots ground out where they are a mowing or trip hazard
- Chips removed, or backfilled and levelled if you would rather keep them
- Topsoil backfill so the area can be seeded or turfed
- Cleanup of the surrounding lawn and hard surfaces

Stump Grinding & Removal questions
Common questions about our stump grinding & removal in Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley.
It depends on what happens next. Grinding a modest depth below grade is enough to turf or seed over the area. Replanting a tree in the same spot needs considerably more depth and volume removed, plus real soil backfill, because new roots cannot establish in a bed of wood chips. Tell us your plan up front so we grind once, to the right depth.
Usually not. Grinding takes out the stump and the surface roots that are a mowing or trip hazard; the deeper root system is left to decay in place, which it does over a period of years without causing problems. Full root excavation is disruptive, expensive, and rarely necessary — the main exception is where roots are actively damaging a structure or hardscape.
Your choice. Grinding produces a surprising volume of chips — considerably more than the stump looks like it should yield, because the material expands as it is cut. We can haul them away, or backfill the hole with them and level it if you would rather keep the material for beds or paths. Chips are not suitable as the growing medium if you intend to replant.
Grinders are heavy and there is some disturbance around the work area, though far less than excavating a stump would cause. The bigger risk is buried irrigation lines and utilities near the stump, which is why we check before starting. Flag anything you know about — irrigation runs, low-voltage cable, invisible fencing — when you book.
Yes, with the right preparation. That means grinding deeper and wider than a turf-over job and replacing the chips with real soil, because remaining wood ties up nitrogen as it decomposes and gives new roots nothing to hold. Planting slightly off-centre from the original stump is often the easier and healthier option.
