Barn & Outbuilding Bird Control
Birds kept out of barns, arenas, shops, and hay storage
A barn offers birds everything they want: rafters to roost on, shelter from the weather, spilled grain, and water. Pigeons, starlings, and sparrows move in for the winter, swallows arrive in spring, and before long there are droppings on the hay, the tack, the equipment, and in the feed and water.
HJ Property Care & Tree Service LLC provides humane bird control for barns, arenas, shops, and open outbuildings across the Bitterroot Valley and the Missoula area. Open-sided buildings are harder to protect than a house, but they can be protected, and the approach is the same: work out which birds are there and how they are getting to the places they use, then close those places off.
Nothing we do harms the birds. They are excluded, not trapped or poisoned.

The plan depends on the building, the birds, and how the building is used:
- Survey of species, roosts, nests, and entry points
- Netting below rafters and trusses to close off the roof space
- Gaps at eaves, ridge, and gable ends closed with mesh
- Deterrents on beams and ledges that cannot be netted
- Cleanup of droppings and old nests
- Advice on feed, water, and doors that keep birds interested
- Work timed around nesting season and your operation
Closing off the roof space
In most barns and arenas the problem is overhead. Birds roost and nest on the rafters, trusses, and purlins, and everything below them is in the firing line. Netting installed beneath that structure turns the roof space into somewhere birds cannot reach, while leaving the building open and usable underneath.
Around the edges, the gaps where the roof meets the walls, the ridge, and the gable ends are closed with mesh so small birds cannot get in behind the netting. Where a beam or ledge cannot be netted, a deterrent takes away the perch. See bird netting and exclusion and bird spikes and ledge deterrents.
Our guide to birds in barns and arenas in Montana goes into more detail on each species and on managing feed and water.
Swallows are a separate question
Swallows are protected, and many owners like having them for the insects they eat. The difficulty is usually where they nest, not that they are there. An active swallow nest has to be left alone, so if you want swallows kept off a particular area, such as over the hay or the wash bay, that area needs to be closed off before they return in spring. Our guide to swallows nesting on a Montana building explains the timing.
Because the rules differ by species, we identify what you have before recommending anything. Our guide to which birds you can remove in Montana sets out which birds are protected.
Cleanup, and keeping it clean
Heavy accumulations of droppings in an enclosed loft or rafter space should not be swept dry. We use wet methods and protective equipment and take the material away. See bird dropping and nest cleanup.
Exclusion works best alongside a few changes in routine: feed stored in closed bins, spills cleaned up, water sources covered where practical, and large doors kept shut when they are not in use. We will point out the ones that matter for your building.

Barn & Outbuilding Bird Control questions
Common questions about our barn & outbuilding bird control in Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley.
Often, yes. Netting below the rafters closes off the roost and nest sites even when the walls are open. We will tell you honestly what is achievable after seeing the building.
No. We use exclusion and deterrents only.
Not while they are active. Swallows are protected. Old nests can be removed outside the nesting season, and the area can then be closed off before the birds return.
It is installed up at rafter or truss level and tensioned, so the working height of the building is kept. We check clearances with you before installing.
Late fall through early spring, when migratory birds are away and nothing is nesting. It is also when winter flocks move into barns, so the benefit is immediate.
Yes. Cleanup is done first, using wet methods and protective equipment, and the material is removed from the property.
