Bird Spikes & Ledge Deterrents
Take the perch away and the mess goes with it
Birds foul the ground beneath wherever they sit. A parapet, the top of a sign, a beam under a canopy, a light fitting, the ridge of a roof: each is a perch, and the line of droppings underneath marks exactly where it is. Take the perch away and that line stops.
HJ Property Care & Tree Service LLC installs spikes, angled ledge covers, and barrier systems on homes and commercial buildings across Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley. They are humane, they do not harm birds, and when they are matched to the species and fitted properly they last for years.
They are also the most commonly misused product in bird control. Spikes on the wrong surface, or for the wrong bird, do nothing, which is why we look at the building before recommending anything.

Request ServiceWhat ledge deterrent work covers
The product follows the survey, never the other way round:
- Survey of where birds perch, roost, and nest
- Spikes sized and spaced for the species involved
- Angled covers that turn a flat ledge into a slope
- Barrier systems for signs, beams, and light fittings
- Surfaces cleaned before anything is fixed down
- Fixings suited to brick, metal, wood, or stone
- Advice where netting would do the job better
Where spikes work, and where they do not
Spikes stop larger birds from landing on a narrow surface. They suit pigeons on parapets, ledges, sign tops, and beams, where the bird is perching or loafing during the day. They need to cover the full depth of the ledge, because a pigeon will happily sit on the strip left bare behind them.
They are much less use against small birds. Sparrows and starlings can stand between the pins and will build nests in them, and a ledge where birds are nesting, not just perching, usually needs to be closed off altogether. For those situations an angled cover, mesh, or netting is the right answer. Our guides to pigeons on buildings and house sparrows nesting on buildings explain how differently the two behave.
Angled covers and other barriers
An angled cover changes the ledge itself: a flat shelf becomes a steep slope that a bird cannot stand on. It suits deep ledges and sills, it is tidy to look at, and there is nothing for debris to catch in. Other barrier systems are used on signs, beams, and pipes where neither spikes nor a slope will fit.
Scare devices such as plastic owls and reflective tape are a different thing. Birds get used to them quickly, so we treat them as a short-term help at most. Our guide to whether bird scare devices work goes through the evidence.
Preparation is most of the job
Deterrents fixed onto droppings do not stay fixed. The surface is cleaned first, using wet methods so dust is not raised, and any nests are dealt with according to the rules for the species. See bird dropping and nest cleanup and bird nest removal.
Where the real problem is birds getting into a space, not sitting on an edge, we will say so and recommend netting and exclusion instead. The cheapest product is the one that works the first time.

Bird Spikes & Ledge Deterrents questions
Common questions about our bird spikes & ledge deterrents in Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley.
No. Spikes are blunt and simply make a surface uncomfortable to land on, so birds go elsewhere.
Usually because the spikes do not cover the full depth of the ledge, are the wrong size for the bird, or are clogged with debris. Small birds can also nest between the pins. A survey will show which it is.
They do different jobs. Spikes and angled covers protect an edge or ledge. Netting closes off a whole space, such as the underside of a canopy. Many buildings need both.
Yes. Sign tops and the cavities inside sign cabinets are among the most common places we treat.
Properly fixed to a clean surface, for years. They should be checked from time to time for debris and loose sections, especially after winter.
From the ground, well-chosen deterrents are hard to see. We match the product and color to the building.
