Can you look at the whole property in one trip?

What are the usual problems on a shop or equipment shed?

Two. Swallows nesting on beams and under the eave of an open bay, and starlings or sparrows getting inside the structure through gaps at the eave, vents, and unsealed junctions. The first is seasonal and protected; the second is neither.

Droppings over stored equipment is generally what triggers the call, and it is a fair reason — they are acidic enough to mark paint and corrode metal given time.

Which of them can be dealt with straight away?

The cavity nesters. House sparrows, European starlings, and rock pigeons are non-native and not protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so their nests can be removed at any time and the openings closed the same day.

Swallows are native and protected while nesting, so netting or beam treatment in an open bay has to wait for autumn or early spring. The timing rules.

Can an open bay be excluded at all?

Often, and the answer depends on how the bay is used rather than what is in it. Netting across the opening is effective where the bay is not in daily use by machinery; where it is, treating the beams and ledges inside is the better route, because a net you have to open twice a day will not survive a season.

How is a build-up in a loft or a void handled?

Carefully, because that is the situation where method matters most: dry material, no airflow, and an enclosed space. Wet methods and dust suppression rather than sweeping, containment and disposal rather than moving it around, and ventilation of the space before anyone works in it.

Can it be combined with other work?

Yes, and out here it should be. A bird survey sits naturally alongside seasonal property work, fence line clearing, or tree work when the crew and access equipment are already on site.

What does leaving it alone actually cost?

Slowly, more than the fix. Droppings are acidic enough to mark paint, corrode metal fittings, and stain concrete and stone over time, so equipment and vehicles stored under a roost degrade where they sit. Nesting material in a gutter backs water up under a roof edge; in a vent or a flue it is a blockage and a fire concern.

Inside a structure the cost is the one you cannot see. A nest in a roof void or a wall cavity accumulates for as long as the access stays open, and on a building nobody enters daily that can be several seasons before anything shows.

None of that is an argument for urgency on the visible roost. It is an argument for closing the openings, which is the cheap half and the half that is not season-constrained.
