Can you exclude birds from a barn I use every day?

Often, but the scope depends on how the building works rather than on what is nesting in it. Netting across an open bay is effective where the bay is not in daily use by machinery; where it is, treating the beams and ledges inside the structure is usually the better route.

That is the conversation we have on site rather than from a photograph. Barns and shops with swallows are one of the most common jobs in this part of the valley and the answer varies more by use than by species. See bird netting and exclusion.

Are the swallows worth keeping?

On an irrigated property, frequently yes. They eat a substantial volume of flying insects, and a lot of Corvallis places conclude that the barn can stay as it is and only the house entrance, the walkway, or the area over parked equipment needs excluding.

That is a smaller and cheaper job than a whole-property exclusion, and we would rather quote it that way when it is what the property actually needs.

Something is getting inside the shop wall. What is that?

Usually starlings or house sparrows rather than swallows — they nest inside cavities, not on the face of them. Access is through vents, gaps at the eave, unsealed junctions, and any opening into a wall or roof void. The tell is noise inside the structure and material appearing below an opening.

That work is worth doing promptly, and it is rarely held up by the calendar: all three of the common cavity-nesters here — house sparrow, European starling, rock pigeon — are non-native and not federally protected, so their nests can be removed at any time.

Do I have to wait for a season to deal with swallows?

For anything that covers the nesting surface, yes. Swallows are native and protected while a nest is active, so exclusion goes up in autumn once the site is empty or in early spring before they return.

There are droppings over the stalls and the workbench. How is that cleared?

Wet, contained, and with dust suppression rather than dry sweeping — droppings and nesting material can harbour pathogens and support fungal growth, and dry-disturbing an old accumulation puts particulate into the air in a space you work in.

Enclosed spaces need the most care: a loft, a void, or a covered bay with no airflow is exactly the situation where the method matters. How cleanup is handled.

Can this be scoped with other property work?

Do the scare devices and reflective deterrents work?

Briefly, and then not. Visual and audible scare devices work on the novelty of the thing rather than on any lasting property of it, and birds habituate quickly — often within days on a site they have already committed to. We treat them as a supplement to physical work, not a substitute for it.

The same goes for anything that depends on a bird making a choice. What holds is work that removes the choice: netting across an opening, mesh over a cavity, an angled surface that cannot be stood on.

It is worth saying because these devices are cheap and widely sold, and a season spent on them is a season of accumulation over your equipment and a nesting site the birds are now attached to.
