Why is being local more useful for this than for other work?

Because exclusion is scheduled against a calendar you cannot move. For protected species the install has to land before the birds arrive or after the young have fledged, and those windows are short. A survey that slips by three weeks in March can push the whole job to autumn.

Being in town means the survey happens the same week you ask, and the install can shift by a day when the weather turns rather than by a month.

What is the first thing you look at?

The species and the access points, in that order. Three common birds — house sparrow, European starling, and rock pigeon — are non-native and carry no federal protection, so their nests can be removed at any time. Everything else is protected while nesting, and that decides the schedule before anything else does.

Then the building: not just the visible roost, but every opening a bird can use. A vent screened while the soffit gap beside it stays open has not achieved anything. What the survey covers.

Is my problem nesting or roosting?

Roosting is a surface being stood on — a ledge, a beam, a parapet, the top of a light — with droppings accumulating below a line, year round. Nesting is a located structure and it is seasonal: a mud cup under an eave, or a mass of grass stuffed into a cavity or a vent.

They need different work. Roosting is solved by changing the surface; nesting is solved by closing the access, and only outside the season if the bird is protected.

Can you deal with birds in the roof or the vents?

Yes, and on a Florence house that is usually the job worth doing first. Starlings and sparrows nest inside cavities — gable vents, soffit gaps, dryer and bathroom vents, and any opening into a roof void. A bird nesting inside a structure does damage nobody sees until a ceiling stains or a vent blocks.

Because those species are not protected, that work is not held up by the calendar. It is also low-visibility and comparatively cheap, which makes it the best-value part of most residential jobs.

What about the mess underneath?

It gets cleared properly rather than swept. Droppings and nesting material can harbour pathogens and support fungal growth, and dry-disturbing an old accumulation puts particulate into the air — which is why an attic or a soffit run is handled with ventilation and containment rather than a brush.

How long does exclusion last once it is in?

Properly installed netting and mesh are a multi-year fix rather than a seasonal one, because they remove access rather than discouraging use. That is the whole argument for spending on exclusion instead of running a cleaning schedule.

What ends it is mechanical rather than behavioural: fixings loosening, a net losing tension, or a new gap appearing after a re-roof, a new vent, or general movement in the building. A look at the edges once a year costs almost nothing and is the single thing that keeps the work doing its job.
