Commercial Bird Control

Keep birds off storefronts, signs, and loading areas

On a commercial building, birds are a customer-facing problem before they are anything else. Droppings on the entrance mat, on the sign over the door, on the tables on the patio, and on the cars in the front row are what people see first, and no amount of pressure washing keeps ahead of birds that have decided the building is home.

HJ Property Care & Tree Service LLC provides humane bird control for businesses, restaurants, warehouses, and managed properties across Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley. We work out which birds are involved and how they are using the building, then close them out of it with exclusion and deterrents that stay in place, and clean up what they left.

The work is planned around your business: staged so entrances stay open, scheduled outside peak hours, and finished to look like part of the building, not an afterthought.

What commercial bird control covers

Every job starts with a survey of the whole building, not only the spot with the mess:

  • Species and access-point survey of the building
  • Netting for canopies, loading docks, and open structures
  • Ledge deterrents for parapets, signs, and beams
  • Mesh and screening over vents, gaps, and sign cabinets
  • Dropping and nest cleanup before the install
  • Fixings and colors chosen to suit a public frontage
  • Work staged around opening hours and deliveries

Why cleaning alone never ends

Most businesses start by cleaning, and most find that the cleaning becomes a standing cost. Birds return to the same ledge, sign, or beam because it suits them: it is sheltered, it is warm, it has a view, or it is near food. Until that spot is made unusable, the droppings underneath it are a recurring bill. Our guide to bird droppings at a commercial entrance explains why entrances and signs are chosen so often.

Exclusion ends the cycle. Netting closes off the space above a canopy or dock, ledge deterrents take away the perch, and mesh closes the cavities that small birds nest in. Once the birds cannot use the building, the cleaning is done once. See bird netting and exclusion for how each is installed.

Food businesses, patios, and health inspections

For restaurants, breweries, grocers, and anyone handling food, birds are also a sanitation matter. Open patios, dumpster areas, and roll-up doors are where the trouble starts, and the answer is usually a combination of closing off overhead perches, managing waste and spilled food, and keeping birds out of the building itself. Our guide to bird control for restaurants and food businesses goes through it.

Accumulated droppings are handled as a health matter as well as a cosmetic one. Cleanup is done with wet methods and protective equipment so dust is not raised around staff and customers. See bird dropping and nest cleanup.

Timing, protected birds, and leased buildings

Many of the birds that nest on buildings are protected by federal law while their nests are active, which is why commercial work is best scheduled before nesting begins in spring or after the young have gone. We identify the species first and tell you what can be done now and what has to wait. Our guide to which birds you can remove in Montana sets out the rules.

In a leased building it is worth settling who is responsible before work is quoted: the tenant, the landlord, or the association. We can prepare a scope that either party can approve, and we work with property managers who look after several sites.
