Why hire it out rather than doing it yourself

The honest answer for most people is the ladder. Holiday decorating falls are common enough that safety organizations warn about them every December, and western Montana adds its own problems: ground that is frozen or icy at the base of the ladder, short daylight, wind along a roofline, and gutters and shingles that are brittle in the cold. The job is rarely difficult. It is just done at height in the worst conditions of the year, often by someone who does it once a year.

The second answer is time. A roofline, a couple of trees, and the walkway is most of a weekend for one household, and it happens twice, since the lights have to come down again. Takedown is the half nobody plans for, which is why so many strands stay up until March.

And the third is how it looks. Straight runs, even spacing, clean corners, and cords that are not visible from the street are the difference between a display that looks deliberate and one that looks like it was finished in a hurry before dark.

How a Montana installation should be done

Timing matters more here than in most places. The best window is early to mid November, before the ground freezes hard, snow sits on the roof, and ice forms along the gutters. Lights can go up early and stay off until whenever you like to turn them on. Waiting until the week after Thanksgiving means working on a roof that may already be icy.

Lights should be attached with clips made for the purpose, not nails, screws, or staples. Fasteners driven through shingles, fascia, or gutters make holes that let water in, and in a freeze-thaw climate that water finds the wood behind them. Clips come off in January and leave nothing behind.

The electrical side is where DIY setups go wrong quietly. Lights and extension cords should be rated for outdoor use, plugged into outlets with ground-fault (GFCI) protection, and kept off circuits that are already carrying heaters or other loads, and cord connections should sit up out of snow and standing water. LED strands draw far less power than the old incandescent ones, which makes it much easier to run a larger display without overloading anything.

Trees need their own care. Wrapping lights tightly around a branch and leaving them for months can girdle smaller limbs, and heavy strands add load to branches that will also be carrying snow. Our crew are tree people first, so lights go on in a way that does not hurt the tree underneath them.

Installation, takedown, and what happens next

We are also looking at storing lights between seasons, so they come back out next November already sorted and tested; if that would be useful to you, say so when you get in touch.
