Best Landscaping Companies in the Bitterroot Valley (2026)
HJ Property Care & Tree Service publishes this guide and lists itself first. Every other company here is a real business that we checked on its own website in November 2026. Nobody paid to be included, and the notes on each company stick to what that company says about itself.
Reviewed by Adam Hurlbert, Owner & Founder, 15+ years in landscape & property care
The Bitterroot Valley has fewer landscaping companies than Missoula, and the ones here tend to cover more ground: a single firm may do dirt work, irrigation, hardscape and snow. That is useful on acreage and rural lots, but it also means the right company depends heavily on the job. The eight companies below are either based in the valley or name Bitterroot towns on their own websites, and they range from a high-end design-build firm in Victor to family-run crews in Stevensville and a landscape designer who consults on plans. We list ourselves first, and say so plainly.
How did we choose these landscaping companies?
HJ Property Care & Tree Service publishes this guide and lists itself first. Every other company here is a real business with a working website of its own, and is either based in the Bitterroot Valley or names the valley or its towns as a service area, checked on 2 November 2026. We recorded what each site says about services, location, history and credentials, and nothing else. Nobody paid to be included. We left out directory pages, lead-generation sites built around town names with no business behind them, and companies we could find only on social media or review sites.
After first place, the order is not a quality score. It runs roughly from full design-build to maintenance and design-only firms. We did not use ratings or prices.
1. HJ Property Care & Tree Service (Florence)
That is us, a locally owned company based in Florence and founded in 2024 by Adam Hurlbert and Justin Johnson. We do landscaping design and installation, hardscaping, retaining walls, irrigation, custom fencing, lawn care and licensed fertilizer and weed control across the Bitterroot Valley and Missoula. Justin is an ISA Certified Arborist (RM-8889A), so tree work and fire mitigation are done in-house.
Best for: owners who want landscaping, trees, irrigation and seasonal work from one crew, including in wildfire-exposed areas. Worth knowing: we are a young company, and every project is quoted on site rather than from a price list.
2. Thomas Landscape (Victor)
Thomas Landscape lists a Meridian Road address in Victor and says it has worked in custom, large-scale landscaping for more than 17 years. Its services cover custom design, full installations and hardscapes, retaining walls, water features, irrigation, outdoor lighting, grading and drainage, earthmoving and tree planting. It describes its team as ICPI-certified and says it runs a private tree nursery.
Best for: large, designed projects and builders or HOAs that want design through installation. Worth knowing: the site is aimed at high-end residential, builder and HOA work and does not list routine lawn maintenance.
3. Allegiant Irrigation and Landscape (Stevensville)
Allegiant Irrigation and Landscape is on US Highway 93 North in Stevensville. Its site lists irrigation design, installation, remodels, service and blowouts, plus retail irrigation sales for do-it-yourselfers; landscape design, native and low-maintenance landscapes, fencing and curbing; hardscape including paver patios and retaining walls; dirt work from excavation and drainage correction to road builds and pads; and snow plowing. It cites a combined 62 years of experience.
Best for: rural and acreage properties that need earthwork, irrigation and landscaping from one contractor. Worth knowing: the site does not name the owners or list credentials.
4. Ivory Peaks Landscaping & Excavation (Stevensville)
Ivory Peaks Landscaping & Excavation is a family-owned Stevensville company that says it has served the Bitterroot Valley since 2021. Its services include landscaping and hardscaping, irrigation, lawn care, excavation, tree services and fire mitigation, and snow removal, with free estimates. It names Stevensville, Hamilton, Corvallis, Victor, Florence, Grantsdale and Pinesdale in its service area.
Best for: Bitterroot owners who want excavation and landscaping from the same crew. Worth knowing: the site does not list owner names, a street address or credentials.
5. Winding Creek Landscape (Bitterroot Valley)
Winding Creek Landscape is family owned and lists landscape design and installation, retaining walls, paver patios and walkways, tree and shrub planting, decorative rock and mulch, sod installation, and seasonal cleanup and lawn maintenance. It names Hamilton, Corvallis, Stevensville, Victor, Florence and Darby in its service area and says design clients receive a free guide on trees and shrubs for Montana landscaping.
Best for: residential installs, from a new lawn to a patio and plantings, in the south and central valley. Worth knowing: the site does not give a founding year, owner names or a business address.
6. Legacy Landscapes (Hamilton)
Legacy Landscapes lists an address on South Camas Lane in Hamilton and serves Hamilton, Darby, Corvallis, Victor and Stevensville. Its services include landscaping, hardscaping such as patios, walkways and retaining walls, landscape design including 3D design, lawn care and seasonal cleanup, and outdoor living features. It is locally owned and states more than 25 years of experience.
Best for: Hamilton and south-valley homeowners who want to see a 3D design before building. Worth knowing: the site does not name owners or list credentials, and its contact email uses the domain of Two Brothers Lawn and Snow, another Hamilton company, so ask how the two are related.
7. Montana Grounds Pro (Lolo)
Montana Grounds Pro is based in Lolo and lists lawn fertilization and weed control, lawn and landscape maintenance, insect and lawn disease control, bare-ground vegetation control, irrigation maintenance, repair and installation, landscaping and water features, and snow and ice management. Its service area runs from Lolo, Florence, Stevensville and Hamilton to other western Montana towns.
Best for: ongoing lawn treatment and grounds maintenance at the north end of the valley. Worth knowing: it is maintenance-focused, and the site does not list its pesticide license or other credentials.
8. Christiane Holmquist Landscape Design (design only)
Christiane Holmquist Landscape Design is a Montana-based residential landscape designer serving Missoula, the Bitterroot Valley and the Flathead Valley, who says she moved to the Missoula area after 25 years of landscape design in the San Diego region. She offers design and consultation by phone, on site or both, and favors Montana native and other climate-adapted, low-maintenance plants.
Best for: owners who want a planting plan or design to build themselves or hand to an installer. Worth knowing: this is a design service, not an installation crew.
Do you need a Bitterroot company or will a Missoula firm travel?
Some Missoula landscapers may take work in the valley, so it is worth asking, even if their sites do not say so. For a single build project, distance matters less than fit. For maintenance, a crew whose route already runs near you is easier to schedule and quicker to respond. If you are in Florence, Lolo or Stevensville, our list of landscaping companies in Missoula is worth reading too.
Bitterroot lots also bring their own questions: irrigation ditch water, wells, acreage, deer, and wildfire exposure on the benches. Ask how much of a company's work looks like your property. Our guides to irrigation ditches and water rights, landscaping a rural acreage and deer-resistant plants help frame those conversations.
Design-only, design-build or maintenance?
These companies are not interchangeable. A designer gives you a plan and leaves the building to someone else, which suits owners who want to do the work in stages or have a contractor already. A design-build firm carries a project from drawing through installation under one contract. A maintenance company prices a season rather than a project. Settle which one you need first, then compare only companies of that kind.
What should a landscaper ask about your site?
Good questions early are a useful sign. Expect to be asked where water goes, what the soil is like and how equipment gets in. Montana State University Extension recommends at least a 1 percent slope away from the house for lawns, about an inch every 8 feet, and says Montana soils typically run about pH 7 to 8, so grading and a soil test are reasonable first topics. A quote written without walking the property is hard to compare with one that was.
What should you check before hiring a Bitterroot landscaper?
Ask for the company's Montana construction contractor license status, proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation or an exemption certificate, and a written scope. If weed spraying is part of the job, ask for the Montana Department of Agriculture applicator license; the department says anyone in the business of applying pesticides must have one. Our guides to choosing a landscaping company and contractor licensing for landscapers explain each check.
When should you book landscaping in the Bitterroot?
Design and quotes are easiest over the winter, and spring installation calendars fill early. Late summer into fall is a good window for seeding and many plantings. If the full plan is bigger than one season, see phasing a landscape project, and for budgeting, what drives landscaping costs.
