Best Landscaping Companies in Missoula (2026)
HJ Property Care & Tree Service publishes this guide and lists itself first. Every other company here is a real Missoula-area business that we checked on its own website in September 2026. Nobody paid to be included, and the notes on each company stick to what that company says about itself.
Missoula has no shortage of landscapers, but they are not interchangeable. Some are design-build shops that live on patios and retaining walls, some are maintenance crews that mow and fertilize on a route, and a few only take commercial contracts. The fastest way to a good hire is knowing which kind of company you need before you call. This list sorts nine local firms by what they actually do.
How did we put this list together?
We started from companies that serve Missoula and have a working website of their own, then read each site for the services it lists, where the company is based, how long it has operated and any credentials it states. We left out anything we could not confirm: lead-generation sites with no real business behind them, companies whose sites would not load, and firms that only have a social media page. We did not use star ratings or review counts, because those change weekly and are easy to misread.
The order after first place is not a quality score. Companies are grouped roughly by how broad their landscaping work is, from full design-build down to specialists, so you can skip to the kind of firm that fits your project.
1. HJ Property Care & Tree Service (Florence)
That is us. We are a locally owned company based in Florence, working across Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley. On the landscaping side we do custom landscape design and installation, hardscaping and retaining walls, xeriscaping, landscape lighting, lawn care and commercial grounds. Owner Adam Hurlbert has more than 15 years in landscape design, irrigation and grounds management, including a stint as superintendent of an 18-hole golf course and years running a multi-crew landscape company. Co-owner Justin Johnson is an ISA Certified Arborist (RM-8889A), so tree work is handled in-house rather than subcontracted.
Best for: property owners who want landscaping, irrigation, tree care and seasonal work from one crew that already knows the property. Worth knowing: we founded HJ in 2024, so we are a younger company than several firms below, even though the owners' experience runs much longer. We do not publish a price list; every project is quoted on site.
2. Garden City Florascaping (Missoula)
Garden City Florascaping has served the Missoula Valley since 1995 from its shop on North 5th Street West. It is a Belgard Authorized Contractor, and it says its installers are trained and certified by the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association. Its work covers design-build, paver patios, stonework, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, irrigation and fencing, and it offers 3D renderings for hardscape projects.
Best for: a designed paver or stone project where a manufacturer-backed install matters to you. Worth knowing: its gardening and maintenance program is aimed mainly at landscapes it installed, so it is not a route-based mowing service.
3. Roots Landscape (Missoula)
Roots Landscape is a family-run design-build company founded in 2010 by Joe Bartuska. It builds patios, retaining walls, walkways, stairs and boulder work, often with natural stone and timber, and it takes on drainage problems such as standing water, clay soils and springs. It states it is a registered contractor with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry and a member of the Stone Foundation.
Best for: natural-stone hardscapes and yards with a drainage problem to solve first. Worth knowing: the site lists no routine mowing or maintenance service.
4. Nature's Best (Missoula)
Nature's Best is an owner-operated company that has worked in the Missoula Valley since 1995. It covers the maintenance side thoroughly: mowing, pruning, cleanups, traditional and organic fertilizer and weed control, sprinkler service with certified backflow testing, tree removal, and snow and ice removal, for both homes and commercial properties.
Best for: owners who want a single year-round maintenance vendor. Worth knowing: its site is built around ongoing service rather than a hardscape or design portfolio.
5. Black Mountain Lawn & Landscape (Missoula)
Black Mountain Lawn & Landscape is locally owned and does landscape design, paver patios, flagstone walkways, retaining walls, water features, plantings, lawn maintenance and sprinkler work from installation through fall blowouts. It states it is licensed and insured and that it avoids chemicals that are unsafe for families and pets.
Best for: a water feature or patio project combined with ongoing lawn care. Worth knowing: the site does not publish a street address or how long the company has been operating.
6. Allegiant Irrigation & Landscape (Stevensville)
Allegiant works out of Stevensville on US 93 and owns Missoula Sprinkler Supply. Alongside landscape design, native plantings, pavers, curbing and fencing, it does dirt work: excavation, drainage correction and road building. It also runs irrigation service and sells parts to do-it-yourselfers.
Best for: acreage and rural properties that need earthwork, irrigation and landscaping from one contractor. Worth knowing: it is based in the Bitterroot, so in-town Missoula jobs involve a drive, and the site lists no credentials.
7. No Gas Lawn, Snow & Home Care (Missoula)
No Gas is a maintenance company that runs electric equipment wherever it can. Its services include mowing, aeration and overseeding, fertilizer and weed control, sprinklers, spring and fall cleanups, landscape construction and commercial xeriscaping, plus snow plowing for homes and businesses.
Best for: homeowners who care about quieter, lower-emission yard care. Worth knowing: it is maintenance-first, with no hardscape portfolio or credentials shown on the site.
8. Pro Sweep Plus (Missoula)
Pro Sweep Plus is a commercial services company on Grant Creek Road whose landscaping division does design, patios, walkways, retaining walls, sod, hydroseeding, irrigation and pergolas. Its main lines are parking lot sweeping, asphalt and commercial snow and ice management.
Best for: commercial property managers who want sweeping, paving, snow and landscaping under one contract. Worth knowing: landscaping is one service line among several rather than the core business.
9. U.S. Lawns of Missoula (commercial only)
U.S. Lawns of Missoula is a locally owned franchise of the national U.S. Lawns brand, under local ownership since 2020. It handles commercial landscape maintenance, lawn care, irrigation, xeriscaping, hardscapes, tree care and snow for retail sites, HOAs, multi-family, office, healthcare and municipal properties from Missoula to Helena, Butte and the Bitterroot.
Best for: HOAs and multi-site commercial portfolios. Worth knowing: it serves commercial properties only, not individual homeowners.
Do you need a design-build firm or a maintenance company?
Decide this before you collect quotes. A design-build firm prices a project: a patio, a retaining wall, a new front yard. A maintenance company prices a season: weekly mowing, spring and fall cleanups, fertilizer rounds, sprinkler start-up and blowout. Some firms do both well, but most lean one way, and asking a maintenance crew to build a 4-foot wall, or a hardscape shop to mow weekly, is how projects go sideways.
If you are unsure, describe the outcome you want and ask each company what share of its work looks like that. The answer tells you more than a portfolio page.
What should you ask a Missoula landscaper before hiring?
Ask who will actually do the work, whether they use subcontractors for irrigation, electrical or hardscape, and whether they carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Ask how they handle Missoula's clay and gravel soils, where drainage and base preparation decide whether a patio heaves after two winters. When is the best time to book landscaping in Missoula?
Design work and quotes are easiest to schedule in late fall and winter, when crews are off installation and can plan properly. Installation runs from spring thaw into fall, and the spring calendar fills early, so a project designed over the winter is usually first in line.
