Best Tree Service Companies in the Bitterroot Valley (2026)
HJ Property Care & Tree Service publishes this guide and lists itself first. Every other company here is a real Bitterroot Valley business that we checked on its own website in September 2026. Nobody paid to be included, and the notes on each company stick to what that company says about itself.
Tree work in the Bitterroot is a different job from tree work in town. Lots are bigger, conifers crowd houses on the valley edges, wildfire risk shapes what should be cut, and the nearest crew may be thirty miles away. The companies below are based in the valley or regularly work in it, from Florence and Stevensville down through Corvallis, Hamilton and Darby. Here is what each one does and where it works.
How did we choose these tree companies?
Every company here has a working website of its own that lists tree work, and is based in or serves the Bitterroot Valley. We recorded the services, towns and credentials each one states, and nothing else. Several Bitterroot tree services only have a directory or social media listing; we left those out because we could not confirm what they offer. We did not use ratings or prices.
After first place, the order is not a quality score. Full-service companies come first, then smaller specialists.
1. HJ Property Care & Tree Service (Florence)
We are based in Florence, and co-owner Justin Johnson grew up in Corvallis. Justin is an ISA Certified Arborist (RM-8889A) with a Line Clearance Arborist Certification from utility forestry work. We handle tree removal and pruning, stump grinding, risk assessments, fire mitigation and defensible space and 24-hour storm response across the whole valley, from Florence and Stevensville to Hamilton and Darby, and north to Missoula.
Best for: owners who want the arborist, the stump grinder and the landscape crew to be one company. Worth knowing: HJ was founded in 2024, so the company is younger than several below, even though the owners' experience runs much longer.
2. Bug Off Tree Service (Hamilton)
Bug Off Tree Service is family owned and has served the valley since 1999 from Hamilton. Alongside trimming, removals, storm and hazard work and stump grinding, it offers tree health services including air spading and deep-root fertilization. The same family business also does pest control.
Best for: south-valley tree health work, plus removals and stumps. Worth knowing: the site does not name an ISA Certified Arborist.
3. Chainsaw Cheri's Tree Service (Bitterroot Valley)
Chainsaw Cheri's is run by Cheri McAdam, an ISA Certified Arborist and former Montana wildland firefighter who worked as a sawyer, trainer and crew boss. It does removals, trimming, pruning, storm cleanup and fire prevention and mitigation from Florence and Lolo to Hamilton, Victor and Pinesdale, and it is on the City of Missoula's certified arborist list.
Best for: wildfire mitigation led by someone who has cut fire line. Worth knowing: no stump grinding or plant health care is listed.
4. Tree Frog Tree Service (Corvallis)
Tree Frog Tree Service is a family company in Corvallis, owned by Blaine and Cody Plimpton, with more than 20 years in the arborist business. It does hazardous removals, including climbing removals lowered on a zip line near houses, thinning and pruning, fire mitigation and storm work, and it helps owners with insurance claims and Department of Natural Resources grants.
Best for: tight-access removals and fire-mitigation work that may qualify for grant help. Worth knowing: the site states no ISA certification and lists no stump grinding.
5. McNeill's Tree Service (Corvallis)
McNeill's Tree Service was started by David McNeill in 1985. Sylvia McNeill is an ISA Certified Arborist and was Montana's first ISA Board Certified Master Arborist. The company focuses on pruning, select removals and consulting on tree and soil health, and publishes its consulting rates on its site.
Best for: expert consultation and careful pruning. Worth knowing: it takes only select removals and lists no stump grinding; its blog has not been updated recently, so call to confirm availability.
6. Whispering Pines Tree Service (Hamilton)
Whispering Pines Tree Service is a small Hamilton operation whose owner spent ten years on trail work in Montana and Idaho forests before moving into private tree work. It does trimming, removals, fruit tree care and wildfire fuel and ladder-fuel reduction.
Best for: fruit tree pruning and ladder-fuel work around Hamilton. Worth knowing: the site states no ISA certification or insurance and lists no stump grinding.
7. Soller Trees (Bitterroot Valley)
Soller Trees provides arborist services in the Bitterroot Valley: pruning of trees of all ages and sizes, removals, planting and storm cleanup.
Best for: pruning and planting on Bitterroot homes. Worth knowing: the site gives no owner, credentials or years in business, so ask for them.
8. Two Brothers Lawn and Snow (Hamilton)
Two Brothers Lawn and Snow is a Hamilton landscaping company with about 25 years of experience that also does tree removal, trimming and pruning across Hamilton, Darby, Corvallis, Victor and Stevensville.
Best for: tree work bundled with lawn and landscape upkeep in the south valley. Worth knowing: it is a landscaping company first and states no arborist credentials.
Who do you call just for a stump?
If the tree is already down, a stump-only company can be the simplest option. Montana Stump Grinding does nothing else, covers the whole Bitterroot, and publishes a per-inch price on its site. Which tree services work in Hamilton and Stevensville?
In Hamilton, Bug Off, Whispering Pines and Two Brothers are based in town, and Tree Frog, McNeill's, Chainsaw Cheri's and HJ all travel there. In Stevensville, Chainsaw Cheri's and HJ list the town directly, and Two Brothers covers it from the south. Darby and Victor are covered by the south-valley companies and by HJ. Distance matters for emergency work, so for storm response ask each company how quickly it can actually reach you.
What matters most when hiring a tree service in the Bitterroot?
Insurance first: ask for current general liability and workers' compensation certificates, because an uninsured crew injured on your property is your problem. Then credentials: an ISA Certified Arborist on the job, not just on the estimate. Then scope: whether the price includes hauling, chipping and stump grinding.
