Best fire mitigation companies in the Bitterroot Valley and Missoula (2026)
HJ Property Care & Tree Service publishes this guide and lists itself first. Every other company here is a real business that we checked on its own website in November 2026. Nobody paid to be included, and the notes on each company stick to what that company says about itself.
Reviewed by Justin Johnson, ISA Certified Arborist (RM-8889A)
Fuel reduction around a home in western Montana is offered by tree services, forestry contractors and landscape and excavation companies, and they are not interchangeable. Some are built for tall trees near buildings, others for thinning acres of timber, others for brush and land clearing. The eight companies below each have a website of their own that lists fire mitigation or fuel reduction in Missoula County or Ravalli County. We are the first one on the list, because this is our website, and we say so plainly.
How did we choose these fire mitigation companies?
Every company here has a working website that we loaded on 2 November 2026, and that site lists fire mitigation, wildfire mitigation, defensible space or fuel reduction work and either names towns in Missoula or Ravalli counties or is based there. We recorded the services, towns and credentials each site states, and nothing else. We did not use ratings or prices, and we did not contact the companies. A site's claims are its own, so verify insurance and credentials yourself with our contractor checklist.
We left out directory listings, lead-generation pages and templated sites with no identifiable business. We also left out several good local tree companies whose sites do not list fire work, so a missing name is not a judgment. After first place, the order is not a quality score: it runs from fire-focused companies to tree services to broader land and landscape companies.
1. HJ Property Care & Tree Service (Florence)
This is our own company. Our fire mitigation work covers ladder fuel removal and crown separation, selective conifer thinning, low-limb pruning to ANSI A300 standards, needle and dead-material clearing, roof and near-structure cleanup, and slash chipped on site or hauled away. Co-owner Justin Johnson is an ISA Certified Arborist (RM-8889A) with line-clearance qualification, so trees near power lines can be part of the job. We work in Missoula, Lolo, Clinton, Florence, Stevensville, Corvallis, Victor, Hamilton and Darby, and also handle hazard tree removal, stump grinding, landscaping and irrigation.
Best for: owners who want the arborist, the thinning crew and the landscape work under one company, especially where tall trees or power lines sit close to the house. Worth knowing: HJ was founded in 2024, so the company is younger than several below, and we do not do prescribed burning or home hardening.
2. Missoula Defensible Space (Missoula area)
Missoula Defensible Space describes itself as veteran owned and led by a former wildland firefighter with fireline experience in the U.S. Forest Service. Its site lists defensible space, surface and ladder fuel reduction, thinning, brush removal, limbing and selective thinning in overcrowded stands, along with guidance on DNRC and local cost-share programs and help with project mapping and reimbursement. It says it carries forestry and liability insurance and works to NFPA and Firewise USA standards.
Best for: owners who want a fire-only company and help navigating cost-share. Worth knowing: the site says official risk assessments for grant eligibility come from Missoula Fire Ready and the DNRC rather than from the company, and it names its service area as western Montana, so confirm your town.
3. Montana Wildfire Mitigation, LLC (Missoula)
Montana Wildfire Mitigation is based in Missoula and lists hazardous fuel reduction, wildfire risk assessment and forest health management, including tree inventory and land management plans, plus logging, thinning, land clearing, hazard tree removal and debris cleanup. The site says grant funding is available to landowners seeking hazardous fuel reduction, and that profits from timber sales can be used to subsidize the cost of forestry work.
Best for: larger forested parcels where some timber has value and a management plan makes sense. Worth knowing: Ryan Bell is the listed contact, and the site does not state a service area beyond its Missoula base, so ask about Bitterroot travel.
4. Chainsaw Cheri's Tree Service (Missoula and Bitterroot)
Chainsaw Cheri's was founded by Cheri McAdam, whom the site describes as an ISA Certified Arborist and former Montana wildland firefighter with experience as a sawyer and trainer, crew boss and safety authority. The site says the company's roots began in forest fire prevention and mitigation. It does tree removal, trimming and pruning, debris removal, storm cleanup and fire prevention and mitigation, and states that it is licensed and insured. Its towns include Stevensville, Missoula, Hamilton, Lolo, Victor, Corvallis, Florence, Frenchtown, Grantsdale and Pinesdale. It also appears on the City of Missoula's certified arborist list.
Best for: home-site mitigation planned by an arborist with fire line experience. Worth knowing: the home page gives no detail on methods or slash handling, so ask at the walkthrough.
5. Tree Frog Tree Service (Bitterroot Valley)
Tree Frog Tree Service serves Montana's Bitterroot Valley and lists fire mitigation, hazardous tree removals, storm damage, insurance claims and grants through the Department of Natural Resources. It says it has over 20 years of experience in the arborist business and has both a bucket truck and a climber available, and it offers a free assessment.
Best for: Bitterroot owners with difficult removals inside a mitigation job, or who want to ask about grant help. Worth knowing: the site does not spell out how its grant help works, so ask what the company's role is.
6. Whispering Pines Tree Service (Hamilton)
Whispering Pines Tree Service is a Hamilton company offering quality tree care in the Bitterroot Valley. Its site lists three services: tree trimming and removal, fruit tree care and wildfire mitigation.
Best for: Hamilton-area owners who also have fruit trees to look after. Worth knowing: the home page gives no detail on the mitigation work, so ask what it includes.
7. Continental Tree and Land Care (Missoula)
Continental Tree and Land Care is at 5170 Evergreen Road in Missoula and offers fire mitigation and land clearing alongside tree removal and trimming, brush mowing and landscape installation. Its fire page describes tree and brush clearing and creating a firebreak on your property. The company cites over 19 years of industry experience, describes its team as certified arborists and horticulturists, says it is licensed, insured and bonded, and appears on the City of Missoula's certified arborist list.
Best for: Missoula owners who want clearing plus landscaping afterward. Worth knowing: its fire page also covers new-construction land clearing, so be specific that you want selective fuel reduction if that is your goal.
8. Ivory Peaks Landscaping & Excavation (Stevensville)
Ivory Peaks is locally owned, says it has served the Bitterroot Valley since 2021, and offers tree removal, trimming and fire mitigation along with snow removal, excavation, landscaping, irrigation and lawn care. Its site says it removes excess brush, trims branches near structures and creates defensible space. Named towns are Stevensville, Hamilton, Corvallis, Victor, Florence, Grantsdale and Pinesdale.
Best for: mid-valley owners who want brush and limbing plus excavation or landscape work from one company. Worth knowing: the site lists no arborist credential, so if the job involves large trees, ask who plans the tree work.
Which of these companies work in Hamilton, Stevensville or Missoula?
Going by what the sites state: in Hamilton and the south valley, Whispering Pines is based in town, and Chainsaw Cheri's, Ivory Peaks, Tree Frog and HJ all list the area or the valley. In Stevensville and Florence, Ivory Peaks is based in Stevensville, and Chainsaw Cheri's and HJ list both towns. In Missoula, Missoula Defensible Space, Montana Wildfire Mitigation and Continental are local, and Chainsaw Cheri's and HJ also list it. Our own town pages cover local conditions, for example fire mitigation in Hamilton and in Missoula. Always confirm travel and availability when you call.
Do you need a tree company, a forestry contractor or a land clearer?
Match the company to the hardest part of your job. If tall trees sit over the house or near a line, you need climbing or lift capability, plus an arborist deciding what stays. If you have many acres of crowded timber, a forestry contractor with a management plan may fit better; our fuel break guide explains that work. If the issue is mostly brush and grass in the open, a land or landscape crew may be enough. See also fire mitigation versus tree removal.
Is there a cost-share list of approved contractors?
Missoula County's Wildfire Ready cost-share page says a list of approved contractors is available as part of its process, and that the county pays up to 75 percent of eligible costs, subject to a per-acre cap, directly to the contractor after inspection. Ask the county for the current list, and do not assume that any company above is or is not on it. In the Bitterroot, the Bitter Root RC&D runs a separate hazardous fuels program, subject to funding. See the cost-share and grants guide.
What should you ask a fire mitigation company before signing?
Ask for proof of insurance from the agent, who holds any arborist credential and whether that person will be on site, what crown spacing and limbing height the plan uses, whether trees near lines are included, how slash is handled and when, and what the site looks like when the crew leaves. ISA also advises getting more than one estimate and not always taking the lowest bid. Our full list is in questions to ask before hiring.
Should you get a free assessment before calling anyone?
Yes, where you can. The Missoula Fire Department, Missoula County, Montana DNRC and the Fire in the Root council in Ravalli County all offer free visits, listed in our free assessments guide. An assessment from someone with no stake in the work makes any estimate easier to judge.
