Aeration & Overseeding
The fix for compacted, thinning turf
If your lawn is thinning, water pools or runs off instead of soaking in, and weeds are gaining ground every year, the problem is usually underneath the grass rather than in it. Compacted soil does not let water, air, or fertilizer reach the root zone. You can keep feeding and watering a compacted lawn and see very little for it.
Core aeration pulls plugs of soil out of the lawn, which relieves compaction, opens channels for water and air, and gives seed direct contact with soil. That last part is why aeration and overseeding are done together: seed broadcast onto an unaerated lawn largely sits on thatch and never germinates, while seed dropped into open aeration holes has the soil contact it needs.
Timing matters more here than technique. Early fall is the strongest window for cool-season grasses in western Montana — warm soil to germinate in, cooling air, less weed competition, and enough runway to establish before winter. Spring works but competes with weed germination and gives new seedlings the hot dry part of summer to survive.

Aeration and overseeding done as one coordinated job:
- Core aeration — plugs pulled and left to break down, not spike-rolled
- Overseeding with cool-season seed suited to western Montana
- Seed-to-soil contact through open aeration holes
- Guidance on watering the establishment period, which is what makes or breaks it
- Coordination with fertilizer timing

Aeration & Overseeding questions
Common questions about our aeration & overseeding in Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley.
Early fall is the strongest window for the cool-season grasses grown here. Soil is still warm enough for fast germination, air temperatures are dropping, weed competition has eased, and seedlings have time to establish before freeze-up. Spring is workable but you are germinating grass alongside every weed seed in the soil, and the new plants then have to get through summer with a shallow root system.
The reliable signs are water pooling or running off rather than soaking in, soil so firm it is hard to push a screwdriver into, turf that thins and weakens in the same spots every year, heavy foot or vehicle traffic areas, and a thick spongy thatch layer. Clay-heavy soils and newer builds with compacted construction fill are the most common candidates.
Yes, meaningfully. Spikes push soil aside and compress it around the hole, which can make compaction slightly worse. Core aeration removes a plug entirely, so there is somewhere for the surrounding soil to expand into. The plugs left on the surface look untidy for a week or two, then break down and return to the lawn.
Germination typically takes a couple of weeks depending on soil temperature and how consistently the seed stays moist, and meaningful fill-in takes considerably longer. The critical variable is watering during establishment — new seed needs light, frequent moisture until it germinates, which is nearly the opposite of how you water an established lawn. We will walk you through it.
Not on its own. Overseeding thickens turf that is thin, and thicker turf does crowd weeds out over time. But if weeds are the dominant cover, seeding into them mainly feeds the weeds. That situation needs the weed pressure addressed first, and sometimes genuine renovation rather than overseeding. We will tell you which one you are looking at.
