Do you treat the boulevard strip between the sidewalk and the street?

We can, and it is usually the worst-looking part of a Missoula lot — compacted, walked on, salted through winter, and often the last place anybody waters. It is also frequently in the public right-of-way rather than on your title, so what happens there can fall under city jurisdiction.

Practically that rarely stops a fertiliser or broadleaf treatment on a residential boulevard, but it is worth knowing which side of the line you are on before anyone touches the trees in that strip. We will tell you what we see when we walk the property.

Is it safe around kids, dogs, and a vegetable garden?

That is the main reason to use somebody licensed rather than a bag from the hardware store. The product label is legally binding, and it specifies re-entry intervals, buffer distances from garden beds and water, and the wind conditions the work can happen in. Those are the parts a homeowner applying by eye tends to skip.

Do I need a full programme or can you just deal with the weeds?

Both are real options. A spot treatment handles a specific problem — a patch of broadleaf weeds, crabgrass coming through a thin strip — and does not commit you to anything. A season-long programme is fertility plus weed control timed across the year, which is what actually changes a lawn rather than resetting it.

The honest version is that most weed problems in town are a symptom. Thin, short-cut, shaded, or compacted turf is open ground, and open ground is what weeds colonise. If the lawn is thin, the fertility and mowing side does more over two seasons than repeat herbicide does.

Half my yard is under a big maple and nothing grows there. Is that a weed problem?

Usually it is a light problem wearing a weed problem's clothes. Missoula's older neighbourhoods have substantial mature street and yard trees, and under a dense canopy there is not enough light for turf to hold density no matter how well it is fed. Feeding harder does not fix it, and the thin turf then fills with whatever tolerates shade.

The options there are genuinely different: selective crown work to get light down, a shade-tolerant overseed, or accepting that the area wants to be bed rather than lawn. We would rather tell you that than sell you a treatment programme for a spot that will not respond to one.

How often does the lawn actually need mowing?

Often enough that you are only taking about a third of the blade at a time — which through a Missoula June means weekly, and through a dry August means considerably less. Mowing to a calendar rather than to growth is what produces the scalped-then-shaggy cycle most town lawns run on.

Height matters as much as frequency. The optimum for the Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass mixes common here is 2.5 to 3 inches. Bluegrass tolerates being cut shorter but the fescues and ryegrasses in the same seed mix thin out when they are, and thin turf is where the weeds you are paying to treat get in. Leave the clippings down; they return nitrogen and they do not cause thatch.
