MSU Extension gives three rules of thumb for Montana: around Memorial Day, around Labor Day, and around Indigenous Peoples Day, that last one after the final mowing and roughly four weeks before the soil freezes. The recommended total is 2 to 4 pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet across the year, in two or three applications.

The lawn just stops rather than ending at a line. Does that matter?
