My lawn backs onto a field that nobody mows. What can I actually do?

Accept that the fence line is the front line and treat it as its own zone. A lawn programme keeps the turf dense enough to resist colonisation, but seed keeps arriving from the other side every year, so the boundary strip needs attention the middle of the yard does not.

That usually means a wider treated margin along the fence, and going after what is coming through early in its growth rather than after it has set seed. It is a maintenance relationship rather than a one-off fix, and we would rather say that up front than sell a single visit as a solution.

Which weeds should I be watching for on the boundary?

The county publishes eight priority species it wants reported: blueweed, common bugloss, orange hawkweed, salt cedar, Japanese knotweed, purple loosestrife, rush skeleton weed, and yellow flag iris. Ravalli County's own identification material also covers Canada thistle, houndstongue, oxeye daisy, sulfur cinquefoil, whitetop, and Dalmatian toadflax, and spotted knapweed and leafy spurge are on the state noxious weed list.

Several of them read as wildflowers until you know them — oxeye daisy in particular. If you find one of the county's priority eight, calling the Weed Division is the right first move and it costs nothing. The full rundown is here.

Should fertilizing be coordinated with aeration and overseeding?

Yes, and doing them separately wastes both. MSU Extension is explicit that aeration should happen when the turf is vigorously growing — spring and fall — and never when it is dormant, and that overseeding after aerating improves seed-to-soil contact.

So the sequence matters. On a Lolo lawn that has thinned along a boundary, aeration and overseeding followed by a fall fertiliser application will do more than either alone, because you are getting seed into open soil and then feeding it while the roots are still growing.

Is any of this a problem near the creek?

It is a real constraint and it is written into the product label, which is legally binding. Buffer distances near water are not advisory, and Lolo has plenty of properties where the creek or an irrigation feature sits inside the distance that matters.

In practice we identify water on the site before quoting, keep the required buffer, and use a different approach inside it. Two of the county's priority weeds — purple loosestrife and yellow flag iris — grow in and near water specifically, which is exactly the situation where the buffer rules bite hardest.

Do I need a programme or a one-off treatment?

For a property with an open boundary, a programme generally earns its keep and a one-off generally does not, because the pressure is annual. For an interior lot with a specific patch problem, a spot treatment is often all that is needed.

Does the way I water change the weed problem?

More than most people expect. MSU Extension is direct about it: frequent light watering produces shallow roots and grass that is less able to handle drought, and it specifically favours weeds like annual bluegrass and rough stalk bluegrass. The rule is to water early in the morning, and as deeply and as infrequently as the soil will take it.

Soil type sets the pace. Clay takes water slowly and has to be watered slowly, but holds it longer. Sand takes it fast, drains fast, and needs more frequent cycles. Over-watering does its own damage — it starves roots of oxygen and leaches nutrients below the root zone, so you are paying for fertiliser that ends up somewhere it cannot be used.

If your irrigation is running a short cycle every day, changing that is free and it will do more for the lawn than another treatment will.
