Shovel, Snow Blower or Plow Service: Which Fits Your Driveway?

HJ Property Care Team··7 min read·Last updated

There are three ways to get snow off a driveway: move it by hand, move it with a machine you own, or have someone arrive with a plow. Each is the right answer for some properties and the wrong one for others, and what decides it is rarely the tool. It is the length and surface of the drive, the slope, who is available to do the work at six in the morning, and what happens to the household if the work does not get done.

What is a shovel actually good for?

A shovel is the most precise snow tool there is. It goes where nothing else fits: steps, landings, the path to the door, the gap between parked cars, the strip in front of the garage. It works on every surface without damaging it, and it lets you put the snow exactly where you want it. Every property needs one, including properties with a plow service.

As the only tool, a shovel suits a short, flat drive, a household with someone fit and at home to use it, and storms that arrive a few inches at a time. It stops suiting a property when the drive gets long, when the snow is deep and wet, or when the person holding it should not be doing heavy work in the cold.

What does shoveling ask of your body?

More than it looks like. The American Heart Association says many people may face an increased risk of a heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest after shoveling heavy snow. A cardiac surgeon quoted by the association describes shoveling as a very strenuous activity made more so by cold, which raises blood pressure while constricting the coronary arteries.

The association says the concern is greatest for people who already have cardiovascular risks, including a sedentary lifestyle or obesity, current or former smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure, and for anyone who has had a heart attack or stroke. Its advice is to consult a physician first, as you would before starting an exercise program, to take it easy with short breaks, and to stop immediately if you feel chest pain or pressure, lightheadedness, palpitations or an irregular heartbeat, calling 911 if symptoms do not subside. If that list describes someone in your house, the choice of tool is a health decision before it is a convenience one.

When does a snow blower make sense?

A snow blower fits the middle of the range: a paved drive too long to shovel comfortably, with open ground on at least one side to throw snow onto, and an owner who is home after storms and willing to maintain a machine. It moves snow well away from the pavement instead of building a bank at the edge, which keeps the drive from narrowing as the winter goes on.

It also does sidewalks and paths well, which a truck cannot. For an owner in town with a modest drive and a public walk to keep clear, a blower is often all the equipment the property needs. If that walk is in Missoula, our summary of the City's sidewalk snow rules explains the deadline you are working to.

Where do snow blowers struggle?

Gravel is the first limit. A machine that picks up snow at the surface also picks up stones, so on gravel the intake has to be set high and a layer is left behind. That is workable, but slow on a long drive.

Slope is the second. Walking a heavy machine up and down an icy hill is hard work and not especially safe. Length is the third: a blower clears a narrow strip per pass, and several hundred feet of drive turns into a great many passes in the dark. And a blower only works if somebody is there to run it.

What does a plow service change?

Scale and timing. A truck clears in minutes what takes an hour by hand, and on a seasonal route it comes at an agreed depth without anyone calling. That matters most on long rural drives, on properties where being snowed in means a missed shift, and for owners who cannot or should not do the work themselves.

A plow has its own limits. It pushes snow instead of throwing it, so it needs somewhere to put it, and that has to be planned before winter. It cannot see what is under the snow, which is why edges, irrigation heads and lighting get marked in the fall. It does not reach steps and narrow paths, so those are done by hand as part of the visit if you have asked for them. Our residential snow removal page sets out what an arrangement covers, and the guide to what drives snow removal cost explains what shapes a quote.

How does the plow berm at the road change the decision?

Every driveway that meets a plowed public road gets a berm: the ridge left across the entrance when the road plow passes. It is denser than fallen snow because it has been pushed and packed, it often contains ice and road grit, and it tends to arrive after you have already cleared the drive. For many households it is the single hardest part of the job.

It is worth knowing when it is likely to appear. Missoula County Public Works says its crews begin plowing roads outside city limits between 5 and 6 a.m. on weekdays following a snowstorm, starting with priority routes, and that there is no guarantee of maintenance outside the crew's regular hours, which includes weekends. On a lower-priority road the berm may come well after you have left for work. A shovel handles a small berm, a blower handles a soft one, and a frozen one across a wide entrance is a job for equipment.

What about second homes and rentals?

An empty house changes the question, because there is nobody there to shovel or to run a machine. An uncleared drive at a second home means no access for a caretaker, a delivery or an emergency vehicle, and a rental with a blocked drive is a problem for the tenant on the first morning. For both, the realistic choice is between an arrangement made in advance and nothing at all.

The same applies to anyone who travels for work in winter or spends part of the season elsewhere. Being on a route is what covers the storm that arrives while you are away. If the property sits on a shared lane, the road has to be open before the drive matters, which is the subject of our guide to who is responsible for a private road.

Can you combine them?

Most households that hire a plow still keep a shovel, and that is the sensible arrangement. The service handles the drive, the berm and any long runs. The owner handles a dusting below the trigger depth and touches up the steps between visits.

The combination to avoid is relying on a tool that depends on a person who may not be available. If the plan is a blower, ask who runs it when you are sick or away. If the plan is a shovel, ask honestly whether the person holding it should be.

How do you decide before winter?

Walk the drive in October and answer five questions. How long is it, and is it paved or gravel? Does it climb? Where would the snow go, with a shovel, a blower or a blade? Who clears it on a weekday morning, and what is the backup? And what does it cost the household if it is not cleared by the time someone has to leave?

If the answers point to hiring it out, do it now. Routes are set before the season, and a property seen on bare ground gets a better plan than one first met under a foot of snow. Snow is one part of our fall and winter services, and the walk-around is where it starts.
