Low-voltage landscape lighting in western Montana

Low-voltage systems run at a fraction of household voltage, which makes them far safer to work around in a landscape where people dig, and much easier to extend or reconfigure later. Installation is also less disruptive because the wiring requirements are lighter. Line-voltage still has its place for some applications, but for the great majority of residential landscape lighting, low-voltage is the right answer.

Good fixtures will, if they are sited sensibly. The failures we see are usually not the fixtures themselves — they are fixtures and wiring placed where snow gets piled or where the plow runs, then sheared off or crushed. That is why we plan the layout around your snow storage and access routes before anything goes in the ground.

Fewer than most people expect. Evenly spaced fixtures every few feet create a runway effect and put glare at eye level, which ironically makes it harder to see. Better practice is to light the changes — steps, turns, level changes, and the destination — with the source shielded so you see illuminated ground rather than bright bulbs.

Yes, and much of our lighting work is retrofit. Low-voltage wiring can generally be run with minimal disruption to established beds and turf. It is easier and cheaper when planned alongside a hardscape or planting project, but a finished yard is not a barrier.

Yes. Transformers are available with timer, photocell, and smart-control options, so lights can come on at dusk automatically, run on a schedule, or be zoned and controlled from an app. We will talk through whether that complexity is worth it for your setup — a good photocell and timer satisfies most people.
