Florence is our home base, and it sits in an unusual spot for wildfire planning: at the north end of Ravalli County, with its fire district reaching across the line into Missoula County. That affects which free programs and which county plan apply to your address. In 2017 it was also the town where the Lolo Peak Fire pushed evacuations deep into the valley. This page is part of our [Montana Wildfire Guide](/montana-wildfire-guide).

Which fire district covers Florence?

The Florence Rural Fire District. It appears on the Ravalli County fire district map in the county's 2024 wildfire protection plan, and Missoula County's 2018 plan also lists it as serving the area north of Florence, about 7 square miles on the Missoula County side. Missoula County's plan notes that its smaller districts outside Missoula and Frenchtown rely entirely on volunteers for structure fires, wildland fires and medical calls.

The Missoula County plan also flags the Eight-Mile area near Florence as having private land without organized fire protection. If your property is on the north edge, ask the district or the county which agency answers a call at your address. Our Ravalli County fire districts guide lists the districts valley-wide.

What happened in Florence during the Lolo Peak Fire?

The Lolo Peak Fire of 2017 burned in the mountains near Lolo and spread south into Ravalli County. Ravalli County's 2024 plan records it at 53,801 acres and notes it ignited in a neighboring county before crossing in. On the night of 23 August 2017, about 150 homes south of Florence were evacuated after erratic winds drove dangerous fire behavior, according to the Flathead Beacon, and the sheriff ordered more evacuations ahead of forecast gusty winds and dry thunderstorms.

The lesson for Florence owners is that the fire did not have to reach town to empty it. A fire on the mountain front west of the highway, pushed by wind, threatened homes along the bench for days. Embers carried ahead of a fire are what reach houses in that situation, which is why the work closest to the house matters most (see how homes actually ignite).

Is Florence considered wildland-urban interface?

Yes. Ravalli County's 2024 plan lists Florence among the communities identified in the Federal Register as wildland-urban interface communities near federal land at high risk from wildfire, along with Stevensville, Victor, Corvallis, Hamilton, Darby, Sula, Conner, Pinesdale and the Highway 93 corridor. The county's own WUI definition puts a one-mile buffer around every addressed structure and counts hay, pasture and crop ground as wildland fuel, so in practice almost every Florence property is inside it.

That last point matters here. Much of the land around Florence is pasture, hay ground and open grass between subdivisions. Cured grass carries fire fast, and a lot of Florence lots back onto it. Mowing and grazing the strip next to buildings is fire mitigation as much as thinning is (see cheatgrass and dry grass).

Which free programs apply to a Florence property?

For an address in Ravalli County, the county's plan names the Fire in the Root Council as a lead on preparedness, and its site offers a free in-person home wildfire risk assessment with a fire professional. Montana DNRC offers a free wildfire risk assessment statewide as well. For an address on the Missoula County side of the line, Missoula County's Wildfire Program (406-880-8090) schedules free home assessments and runs a cost-share for vegetation work.

Fire in the Root's program page also lists the Bitter Root RC&D hazardous fuels treatment grants, open to people living in the wildland-urban interface in Missoula, Mineral and Ravalli counties, with applications taken year round. Programs change; confirm current terms with the administrator. Our cost-share and grants guide keeps the list.

What does fuel reduction look like on a Florence property?

Florence properties fall into two broad types and the work differs. On the valley floor it is mostly grass, windbreak trees and the near-house zone: needles out of gutters, no bark mulch or firewood against the walls, low limbs off the conifers next to the house, and junipers or arborvitae moved away from siding (see high-risk shrubs near homes).

On the timbered ground toward the mountains it is real forestry: thinning crowded ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir so crowns no longer touch, cutting the ladder fuels under them, limbing up to ANSI A300 limits, and chipping or hauling the slash so it does not become the next fuel bed. Our guides to thinning conifers and ladder fuels explain the spacing logic.

How fast can HJ get to a Florence job?

Faster than anywhere else, because we are based here. That matters less for fire mitigation, which should be planned and booked for autumn through early spring, than it does for storm damage. The advantage for fuel reduction is that we can walk your property with you on short notice and come back for follow-up, such as a second pass on regrowth or a spring needle cleanup.

If you already have an assessment from Fire in the Root, DNRC or Missoula County, bring it; we will price the work it recommends. If you do not, we will tell you how to get one.

What should Florence owners plan for evacuation?

The 2017 evacuations around Florence were ordered at night, on short notice, so know more than one way out of your subdivision and keep the driveway clear enough for an engine to get in while you get out. Our Ready, Set, Go evacuation plan walks through it. Ravalli County dispatches city and rural fire departments through its 911 center; find out now how evacuation notices for your road are issued.
