Best Fence Installers in Missoula (2026)

Every other company here is a real Missoula or Bitterroot Valley business that we checked on its own website in September 2026. Nobody paid to be included, and the notes on each company stick to what that company says about itself.
A fence in western Montana has to survive frost heave, heavy snow drifting against it, wind in open valleys and, on a lot of properties, deer and elk leaning on it. The installers below all build fences around Missoula, but some specialize in residential privacy fence, some in ranch and agricultural fence, and a couple do ornamental iron and automatic gates. Here is how they compare.
How did we choose these fence companies?
Every company here has a working website of its own that lists fence installation as a main service, and serves Missoula. We recorded the materials, services, location and history each one states and left out the rest. Several search results for Missoula fence companies turned out to be lead-generation sites with no business behind them, and some landscapers list fencing as a side service; neither made the list. We did not use ratings or prices.
Beyond first place, the order is not a quality score. The long-established Missoula shops come first, followed by Bitterroot-based installers who travel north.
1. HJ Property Care & Tree Service (Florence)
We build cedar, vinyl and chain-link fences and handle fence repair across Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley. Co-owner Justin Johnson grew up in Corvallis and started in fencing and property maintenance in high school and later worked in residential construction. Because we also do landscaping and tree work, we can clear a fence line, deal with roots and grade, and replant afterward without bringing in a second company.
Best for: residential privacy and property-line fences, especially where the job also involves clearing, trees or landscaping. 2. Grizzly Fence (Missoula)
Grizzly Fence is family owned and has called itself Missoula's fence company since 1972. It builds cedar privacy, chain link, wildlife, vinyl, ornamental iron, handrails and ranch fence, installs automatic gates, does repairs and fabrication, and keeps a showroom on Interstate Place. It says it sets chain-link posts below the frost line.
Best for: the widest material range in Missoula, especially iron work and automatic gates. Worth knowing: it does not list licensing details on its site.
3. FenceCrafters of Montana (Missoula and Helena)
FenceCrafters has been owned by the same family since 1989 and says it employs more than 40 people across Missoula and Helena offices. It builds vinyl, cedar on steel posts, chain link, ornamental metal, ranch and rail fence to Montana Department of Transportation specifications, and commercial and sports-facility fencing, and it installs gate openers and rents security fence. It advertises a transferable lifetime warranty on vinyl and a 20-year warranty on ornamental fence.
Best for: large residential, ranch or commercial projects that need a big crew and long warranties. Worth knowing: some inner pages on its site were out of date when we checked, so confirm current products when you get a quote.
4. Turkey Creek Fencing (western Montana)
Turkey Creek Fencing is locally owned and has served Missoula and western Montana since 2003, from Whitefish to the Bitterroot. It builds custom cedar, vinyl, chain link, ornamental iron, post and rail and ranch fence, plus custom gates and gate operators, and its portfolio includes a cedar split-rail walking path in Stevensville.
Best for: custom cedar and ranch fence on homes, farms and ranches. Worth knowing: no street address is published; contact is by phone and email.
5. Spartan Architectural Fencing (Bitterroot Valley)
Spartan Architectural Fencing is a division of Athletic Design Group and says it has been family owned and operated in the Bitterroot Valley for more than 24 years. It builds wood privacy, vinyl, chain link and dog fencing and installs electric gates across Missoula and Ravalli counties, and the owner does each estimate personally.
Best for: residential privacy fence where you want the owner on the estimate. Worth knowing: it lists no ranch or agricultural fence.
6. Bitterroot Fencing Company (Stevensville)
Bitterroot Fencing Company builds chain link, vinyl, cedar privacy, split rail and post and rail fence, automatic and ranch gates, dog kennels and temporary fence, and it will supply materials to do-it-yourselfers instead of installing. It also offers snow plowing and land clearing.
Best for: DIY-inclined owners who want materials and advice, or a Bitterroot-based installer. Worth knowing: the site does not state how long the company has operated.
7. Lenz Fencing (Bitterroot Valley)
Lenz Fencing builds residential and agricultural fence across Ravalli, Missoula and Granite counties. On the residential side it does chain link and vertical or horizontal wood privacy fence on cedar posts with hidden steel posts; on the agricultural side it does woven-wire field fence, barbed wire, post and rail, non-climb and deer and garden fence.
Best for: livestock and agricultural fence. Worth knowing: it is a small operation and publishes no address or years in business.
Which fence material holds up best in Missoula?
Cedar, vinyl and chain link all work here when they are installed properly, and installation matters more than material. Posts need to go below the frost line and sit in well-drained footings, or frost heave will push them out of plumb within a few winters. What should you ask a fence installer before hiring?
Ask how deep the posts go and what they are set in. Ask whether the fence will follow the grade or step down it, and what that looks like on your slope. Ask who confirms the property line, since installers build where you tell them, and a survey is cheaper than a dispute. Ask whether they will call Montana 811 for utility locates before digging.

When is the best time to build a fence in Missoula?
Late spring through fall, once the ground has thawed and dried enough to dig clean post holes. Fall is often the easiest time to get on a schedule, and a fence built before winter is in place for spring.
